Nicole is closing out the month of March with a bang, from hitting the stage @ Carnegie Hall as part of the "Tribute to Led Zeppelin", to returning to Willie Nelson’s ranch for Luck Reunion.
Nicole kicked off March by joining Bettye LaVette, J Mascis, The Zombies, Son Little, Living Colour and many more to bring Carnegie Hall’s 15th Annual “The Music Of…” produced by Michael Dorf to life. The March 7th tribute concert narrowed in on rock n’ roll legends Led Zeppelin to raise over $100K for music education for underprivileged youth.
Nicole Atkins also returned to Texas to perform at Willie Nelson’s ranch, Luck Reunion, on the outskirts of the madness of SXSW. Nicole joined The Texas Gentlemen for their “Gents and Dames” set where she performed an impressive cover of “Stand By Your Man.” Nicole also helped create an unforgettable performance by sharing the stage with not only The Texas Gentlemen, but also Ruby Boots, Erika Wennerstrom, and Lauren Ruth Ward.
Nicole Atkins has announced the release of her soul rendition of “O Holy Night” via Paste. The track appears on Amazon Music’s “Christmas Soul” playlist, which will be available exclusively for streaming on Amazon Music—both Amazon Music Unlimited and Prime Music—beginning on Nov. 24. Listen to the track here.
Of the song, Atkins says: ““O Holy Night” has always been my favorite Christmas song. The first time I heard it, I burst into tears because it was so powerful. I think it was the first time I cried from music taking me over. I always wanted to record this song in a style that made it more human in a way that it could bring the message to the angels from the earth rather than the song already residing up in heaven.”
Nicole Atkins recently opened up to writer Jason Newman in this week’s Rolling Stone’s feature, crediting a hip-hop producer she met in rehab for pushing her into soul music. "One day, he's like, 'Play me your stuff.' He said, 'You're really good, but you need to stop fucking around with this indie-rock bullshit. You're a soul singer. Just do what you do.'"
Asked about the titular Rhonda Lee, which "started as my bowling alias, but became my drunken hag alias," Atkins, now sober, explained to Newman why she was ready to say "good night" to that character. "In my element, I could've been the best fucking thing you've ever seen where I'll get us a free limo ride to the party in Brooklyn and free drugs and then we'll go get steak and eggs in the morning, or I'll say horrible things to your wife," she says. "There was no telling."
Nicole is excited to announce a special collaboration with Tommy Stinson's BASH & POP on two new songs, "Too Late" and "Saturday", to be released digitally, along with a limited edition 7" on November 24 (Fat Possum Records).
Nicole Atkins has shared her new album, Goodnight Rhonda Lee, today via NPR’s First Listen. The album, Goodnight Rhonda Lee, will be coming out on July 21 on Single Lock Records. Pre-order Goodnight Rhonda Lee here. The album was recorded with Fort Worth, TX's Nile City Sound, a.k.a. producers Austin Jenkins, Josh Block, and Chris Vivion (Leon Bridges), with additional mixing by Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes).
“Atkins doesn't treat getting sober and navigating major life transitions as a somber affair… Audacious is more like it, and her album's all the more riveting for her resistance to being buttoned-up… animated by a spirit of impulsiveness, it's also very much the product of artful craft, burnished not only by the symphonic production, but her Brill Building-style grasp of rich melody and sturdy structure.” - NPR First Listen
Nicole's new single and video, "Listen Up", premiered on NPR this week, with a hilarious music video directed by Tim Duggan. The song is from her upcoming studio album, GOODNIGHT RHONDA LEE, out July 21st on Single Lock Records.
I wrote ‘Listen Up’ as a note to self, to stop beating myself up over bad self talk and fear and listen to the good advice of others. I gave it a soul meets Fraggle Rock treatment because that’s the sound of what’s real and positive to me. It’s basically, ’Don’t be your worst enemy. Surround yourself with good people and let them help you.
I came up with the concept of the video after a string of unfortunate events. After a gig I fell into a sinkhole in a parking lot in Knoxville. I got pretty hurt, but it could’ve been a lot worse. I was trying to find the humor in it so I came up with the idea of me being the star of a bunch of Fail videos ala ’America’s Funniest Home Videos.’ You really gotta look where you’re going sometimes.
